1LT Benjamin John Hall: Killed 31 July, 2007 while leading his platoon in combat against Taliban forces in the Chowkay Valley, Afghanistan. Ben is my son and I will always love and honor him. 1LT Hall qualified as a US Army Airborne Ranger in 2005. He served in the 173rd Airborne Combat Infantry Brigade as the platoon leader of 2nd Platoon, D Company, 503rd Infantry Battalion (ABN). He earned the Expert Infantry Badge and designation of "True Blue" as one of the top 22 infantry soldiers in the Brigade. Ben was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with battle star, NATO Campaign Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge (Posthumously). During his time as an Army ROTC Cadet at Michigan Technological University, Ben earned the Outstanding Cadet Award as the top Army ROTC Cadet at the university and was promoted to Cadet Battalion Commander in his senior year. While attending the US Army ROTC summer camp at Ft. Lewis Washington in 2004, he was selected to be the Regimental Commander upon graduation from among 300 other cadets due to his very high standing as one of the top three cadets in the regiment. Upon graduation and commissioning from college in 2005, he was awarded the US Army's Marshal Award for being in the top 5% of all Army ROTC cadets in the Nation.
